Premier League stars who came back to haunt their former employees

The Premier League has been home to some of the greatest goalscorers in Europe over the past several decades. Scoring in such a combative and physical league is hard, let alone bagging three goals in a game. To score three goals takes a huge effort. Considering the quality of the opposition across the board in the Premier League.

England’s top-flight football is also where we get treated to some of the strangest and most fascinating records.  When a player scores a hat trick against his former club, he wins the match ball and earns himself a place in the history books. On the same note, let’s take a look at the top four players to score a Premier League hat-trick against their former club:

4. Chris Wood – Nottingham Forest

Wood netted three goals against Newcastle United

Chris Wood became just the fourth player in Premier League history to score a hat-trick against his former club as Nottingham Forest produced a shock 3-1 win against Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Boxing Day. With his hat-trick against his former club Newcastle United, Chris Wood not only fired Nottingham Forest to their first win under new head coach Nuno Espirito Santo and boosted the club’s bid for safety, but he also joined an exclusive group of players. The 32-year-old became only the second Forest player to score a Premier League hat-trick, after Kevin Campbell in 1996.

3. Joshua King – Watford

Everton capitulated in the closing stages to lose to Watford in an astonishing game at Goodison Park during the 2021-22 campaign. Watford had been trailing 2-1 heading into the final 12 minutes but scored four times in the final minutes to come from behind and claim a 5-2 win. The shell-shocked Everton fans must have wondered if this was the same player who had struggled during an underwhelming spell with the Toffees in 2021. King failed to score in 11 appearances for Everton the previous season.

2. Marcus Bent – Wigan

Marcus Bent scored a hat-trick against his old employers as Wigan beat Blackburn in an eight-goal thriller in 2007. Bent had previously played for Blackburn in the 2001-02 season, failing to score in any of his nine Premier League appearances. He joined Wigan on a season-long loan from Charlton Athletic and scored seven goals in 31 Premier League appearances. Bent scored 40 goals in his Premier League career, featuring for the likes of Crystal Palace, Blackburn, Ipswich, Leicester City, Everton, Charlton, Wigan, and Wolves from 1997 to 2011.

1. Andy Cole – Manchester United

Andy Cole scored four goals in a 5-1 victory for Manchester United, which also came against Newcastle, on the 30th of August 1999. Cole had previously played for Newcastle in the 1993-94 and 1994-95 seasons, scoring 43 Premier League goals in 58 appearances. He made the shock move to Manchester United in the 1994-95 season The goals were the perfect response to Cole’s omission from the latest England squad, while the result continued a miserable start to the campaign for Newcastle, who had taken just one point from six games after the defeat.
