WWE announces return of ‘New Year’s Revolution’ special episode for SmackDown

WWE is the home of running successful shows and annual pay-per-views. Some pay-per-views became iconic and have become a major part of the company’s revenue and success and some are dumbed sideways. WWE has dumped a number of pay-per-view brands in the past and some are now revamped for NXT special shows. However, one such defunct WWE pay-per-view brand is announced as the title of SmackDown’s special show.

SmackDown special New Year’s Revolution

On December 15, 2023, WWE double taped the December 22 episode of SmackDown upon holidays being announced for WWE talents from December 19 to 24. During next week’s taping, AJ Styles, Randy Orton and LA Knight were arguing with each other on who will be facing Roman Reigns first.

The SmackDown General Manager, Nick Aldis announced that the only way to decide who’s first is to have a Triple Threat match between AJ, Randy & Knight at “New Year’s Revolution” special episode on January 5, 2024. The winner of the triple threat match will be given the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship match against Roman Reigns at Royal Rumble 2024.

WWE has previously hosted New Year’s Special as a pay-per-view from 2005 to 2007. In the 2005 and 2006’s edition, the Elimination Chamber match was the main event of the show.

In 2020 WWE brought the name back after 13 years, but for house shows under the name WWE New Year’s Revolution Live Tour.

In 2023 it is heading back to television after 17 years for the SmackDown brand in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. This is the second time the New Year’s Revolution is happening outside the United States. The first time being the inaugural show in 2005 at San Juan Puerto Rico.

NXT has always been hosting special shows under the old forgotten pay-per-view brand names such as Vengeance, No Mercy, The Great American Bash, Battleground, Judgment Day and much more. Could we be able to see more forgotten pay-per-view brand names back on special edition weekly shows? We need to wait and watch.
