Twitter react as Mushfiqur Rahim becomes the first Bangladesh batter to be dismissed for handling the ball

Mushfiqur Rahim is overall the 11th batter in international cricket to get out in this manner.

Bangladeshi veteran batter-keeper Mushfiqur Rahim earned infamy as he became the first batter from his country to get dismissed handling the ball. The instance happened on the ongoing day one of the second test between Bangladesh and New Zealand in Mirpur, Dhaka on December 6, 2023.

Najmul Hossain Shanto, the home captain, won the toss and opted to bat first. However, New Zealand learned from their mistakes and used their spinners Ajaz Patel and Mitchell Santner early in the session, taking four early wickets.

In 15 overs, Bangladesh were reduced to 47/4. The innings was then stabilized by Mushfiqur Rahim (35) and Shahadat Hossain (31). But Rahim’s gritty knock came to an end in a bizarre manner in the 41st over of the innings.

Mushfiqur Rahim had a mental breakdown. Mushfiqur was on 35 when he defended a delivery from seamer Kyle Jamieson with his right hand as it deflected past the stumps. Mushfiqur pushed the ball away with gloves on, even though the ball was not even coming towards the stumps.

Mushfiqur Rahim given out while handling the ball

New Zealand players appealed and the umpires, after a chat sent it upstairs. The replay showed that he had deliberately handled the ball.

Mushfiqur Rahim became the first batter in 22 years to get out, handling the ball in test cricket after Michael Vaughan in 2001 against a test vs India.
