India missed the previous season.
The Indian women’s hockey team will kick off their FIH Women’s Pro League 2023-24 campaign in Bhubaneshwar on February 3. Over the weekend, they will face China and the Netherlands in back-to-back matches at the Kalinga Stadium.
India missed the previous season and finished third in 2021-22. Goalkeeper Savita Punia will captain the team, with forward Vandana Katariya as her deputy. Savita led India to bronze medals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and the 2023 Asian Games.
The team will aim to secure a top-five spot this time. Under coach Janneke Schopman, they will play their first five games in Bhubaneshwar, followed by Rourkela. They will wrap up their home fixtures in Rourkela before heading overseas to complete the season.
What is the tournament format?
The season follows the home and away principle, but it is divided into date blocks. To facilitate international and national competition planning, several teams convene at one venue to compete in “mini-tournaments,” where they play two matches against each other.
If one of the two matches between two teams is cancelled, the winner of the other match gets double points.
The season’s winner will qualify directly for the 2026 World Cup.
