Germany have been one of the elite side in football.

Hosts’ Germany have completed the first level of Euro 2024, with Die Mannschaft finishing the group stage phase as table toppers of Group A, going unbeaten in the process with an impressive record of two wins and a draw.

Germany kicked off their home tournament in stellar fashion as they destroyed a hapless Scotland 5-1 through goals from Florian Wirtz, Jamal Musiala, Kai Havertz, Niclas Fullkrug, and Emre Can, sealing a dominating win in the curtain raiser.

That impressive win was followed by a resounding 2-0 win against Hungary and a nail-biting 1-1 draw against a gritty Switzerland, where Germany rescued a crucial point from the jaws of defeat through a stoppage-time goal from top-scorer Fullkrug to continue their unbeaten run in the tournament and remain as Group A table toppers.

After an outstanding showing in the group stages, Julian Nagelsmann’s side will be beaming with confidence heading into the knockout rounds of Euro 2024.

Historically, Die Mannschaft have been the most successful nation in the history of the European Championships alongside La Roja, with three titles each to their name. However, Germany’s success in this competition has primarily been a notion of the past, as they won their three titles in the years 1972, 1980 (as West Germany), and 1996, respectively.

In the 2000s era, Germany’s record in the Euros was a mixed bag of performances, to say the very least. During Euro 2000 and Euro 2004, the German national football team experienced one of its lowest points in international football as they suffered consecutive group-stage exits from the tournament. In the 2000 edition, they endured a disastrous campaign, finishing dead last in their group stage, scoring only one goal and earning just a single point.

However, Germany made up for these disastrous displays with an exceptional Euro 2008 campaign, where they reached the final, ultimately losing to Spain, who were just on another level in that era.

Since the 2010s, the 2014 World Cup winners have been much more consistent in this competition, with successive semi-final appearances in Euro 2012 and Euro 2016, followed by a Round of 16 exit in Euro 2020 to eventual finalists England.

Under mastermind coach Julian Nagelsmann, Germany’s star-studded squad will be hoping to end their 28-year trophy drought in this tournament, as Euro 2024 provides Die Mannschaft with the dream opportunity to clinch their record fourth title in front of their fans.
