A 15-member contingent will represent India at the World Athletics Relays 2024 event.
The World Athletics Relays 2024, which serves as a qualifying event for relay teams looking to secure quotas in the Paris Olympics 2024 will take place at the Thomas A Robinson Stadium in Nassau, Bahamas on May 4 and 5.
India is aiming to secure Olympic quotas in three 400m relay events at the 2024 World Athletics Relays. The competition will have five relay categories: men’s 4x400m and 4x100m, women’s 4x400m and 4x100m and mixed 4x400m. However, India will only be entering teams in the three 400m relay events: men’s, women’s and mixed.
A total of 893 athletes representing 54 countries will compete in the Bahamas. Among them 15 athletes will be campaigning for India.
Amoj Jacob, Muhammed Anas Yahiya, Muhammad Ajmal and Rajesh Ramesh, the champions of the men’s 4x400m relay at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games will lead India’s charge. They are joined by Arokia Rajiv, Noah Nirmal Tom, Yashas Palaksha and Avinash Krishna Kumar. This formidable quartet holds both the national and Asian records with a stellar time of 2:59.05 set at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest.
Amoj Jacob, Arokia Rajiv, Noah Nirmal Tom and Muhammad Anas Yahiya also represented India during the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Indian women’s 4x400m relay team consists of seven members including the silver-medal winning squad from the Hangzhou Asian Games: Vithya Ramraj, Aishwarya Mishra, Prachi and Subha Venkatesan. Joining them are seasoned runner MR Poovamma, along with Jyothika Sri Dandi and Rupal.
Vithya Ramraj and Rajesh Ramesh are also included in the Indian mixed 4x400m team. Joining them are Jyothika Sri Dandi, Amoj Jacob, Rupa and Yashas.
All the teams competing at the World Athletics Relays 2024 Bahamas have their sights set on securing quotas for the Paris Olympics 2024. With 14 spots up for grabs in each event, the top two teams in each heat on day one will secure their spots in the finals and quotas for Paris 2024. Olympic lane seeding positions will be determined in the finals and teams will also run for medals.
Additionally, teams not making it to the finals will have a shot at qualification in an additional round. A total of 32 teams will compete in the men’s 4x400m relay, 27 in the women’s and 30 in the mixed relay.
